The Mirror

by Sonia Cheug

The young woman walks up to her bathroom mirror .

She stares at the reflection and does not recognise her self anymore .

Once a successful woman , who knew what she wanted from life .

She lost it all . Her friends , her family and her star shinning , confidence .

Her once , beautiful and healthy face was now gaunt and expressionless .

The long beautiful thick hair was now thin , brittle and dry .

Her once curvaceous, envied body was now gaunt . With all of her ribs showing and her bones protruding .

She was terrified of the outside world and locked in her own prison of thoughts .

Weeks past by and no one had seen or heard of her .

As far as she was concerned . She was fat , ugly and meaningless to anyone or anything .

The young woman couldn't take anymore . She opened her front door and walked out onto the street .

Her neighbours were horrified .

Her body had become so week and her mind was so fragile .

She walked down the long , short road to her best friend's house .

The friend opened the door . Her mouth dropped and she cried the tears , the young woman couldn't .

Her friend let her in and sat the young woman down . She went over and hugged her so tight . The friend went into the kitchen for a short moment and came back to find the young woman sleeping on her sofa . She grabbed a blanket and covered her . They spent days , nights and weeks talking about their childhood , growing up and reaching their adult hoods .

The young woman's face became its former glory . Her hair was now thick , healthy and beautiful .

The once gaunt body, protruding bones and rib cage . Had been replaced with her much envied , curvaceous and womanly figure .

The End .
