Floating

by Kevin Sheffar

"Allison. Allison." She swore that she could faintly hear her name being chanted in the distance. And she was almost certain that she could feel people grasping at her clothes. She tried to pry her eyes open, but there was nothing but darkness lining the walls and shadows dancing at the end of her bed. She lifted her heavy, groggy head, but before she could keep it held up she plopped it back down on her pillow. She felt like she was floating on a cloud. Everything just seemed so surreal and dissipated. She lay back down on her cloud and drifted off to sleep.

The sun peered forth through her half-open curtains. She tilted her head over and read the green glow of her alarm clock. Twelve-thirty. She was late for school. No, wait. It was Saturday. She was late for work. She peeked her eyes open more and stared at the wall. As her eyes slid to the corner, images flashed back in her mind. Things that seemed all too familiar. "De-ja Vu," she thought to herself. She rolled over in her half-sleep, and out of bed. Everything just felt like a dream. She changed and showered and served herself breakfast, even though it was well into lunchtime. Called into work and faked her best sick voice, which wasn't too great, but was enough to get the day off.

Boom boom boom. There was a knock on her front door. It was John. She had been dating him for a little over a year now. There seemed to be some kind of sparkle in his eye, she felt like she could just gaze off into them for eternity, and something about them seemed to burn in her soul. Pictures passed in her mind once more and something seemed to recollect but she could not quite hold a grip onto it. They ate breakfast and watched TV for a few hours. But something was stinging her mind, pulsating, and she was too distracted trying to find what it was to pay attention to the TV.

She got up and waltzed slowly into the bathroom. She stared slowly across the sink and noticed something that did not catch her eye when she took her shower earlier. Lying on the sink board was a pregnancy test that apparently she had taken the night before. it was markedpositive. She buried it in the trash, hoping that no one would find it there. "How could this happen?" that question repeated in her mind over and over and over, like a broken record. She walked back to the couch and sat down, trying to look as normal as possible. But He could sense strangeness to her vibe.

"Is everything okay?" John asked with a sense of gentleness to his rough voice. Fine. everything is just fine." Allison echoed back. She picked herself up off of the couch and walked into her bedroom. John followed after her, but when he got to the door, it was bolted shut.

"Allison! Allison?" he screamedbut no answer. The door eventually gave way to his violent thrusts, and he was left staring at his beautiful girlfriend sitting on her bed, knife to her wrist with crimson beads rolling over onto the floor. His mouth opened, but his heart could not find the words. But his tears knew what he wanted to say, and they flowed over his cheeks, glistening in the light. As she tried to finish her work with the blade, he grabbed her by the arms. "No! How could you do this?" She kicked him away, and his grip tore her shirtsleeves. Her mind flashed back and she felt the hands from her dream. She thrust the knife into his chest with all the effort she had left in her body and he fell with his last slow staggering breaths into the corner of her bedroom. Images filled her mind like the missing pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. One last gaze into his eyes. the sparkle was gone. She ran from her room and out the back door, weeping along the way.

"Allison. Allison." She swore that she could faintly hear her name being chanted in the distance. And she was almost certain that she could feel people grasping at her clothes. But she was not hearing, she was not feeling anything. She tried to pry her eyes open, but there was nothing but darkness and shadows dancing. She felt like she was floating. but this timeshe was floating, slowlyto the surface of her pool. And with her eyes wide shut, she drifted off to sleep, never to wake up again.
