To Her, to Him

by Jordan Wellnitz

"Tell me something beautiful," she whispered,

tears threatening to cascade down her pale cheeks.

He smiles and leaned in closely.

Carefully, he whispered her name,

his voice caressing each syllable as if they were made of glass.

Leaning back, he looked into her dark, wet eyes.

She was looking back at him

in a strange mixture of confusion and embarrassment.

Moments pass by and, finally,

she was sobbing loudly into his chest

while he held her and

whispered all of the seemingly ordinary things

that made her so extraordinary to him.

To her, he was the rock that kept her from breaking.

To him, she was the sun that kept him right where he needed to be.
