On This Beach

ON THIS BEACH

We stood here together, in this very spot, many, many times, on this beach.

We loved the feel of the soft warm sand on our feet, the repetition of the cool waves rushing in up to our ankles, all the while depositing grains of sand and small sea shells between our toes.

We gazed out over the endless blue body of water, sharing our secrets and dreaming of our lives together.

We walked, hand in hand, arm in arm for miles and then we would look behind us to see our forever footprints in the sand.

We collected sea shells and built sand castles, only to watch the waves take them away.

We laughed, loved and spent many a moon lit night, on this beach.

Remember when I showed you the sea shell and pulled the ring out from inside?

I got down on one knee, took your small hand in mine and asked you to marry me.

It was the happiest day of my life, on this beach.

But today as we walk, this is the first time we look behind us and see that there is but only one set of footprints in the sand, MINE.

This is the saddest day of my life, on this beach.
