Too Strong

by John Farrow

Too strong

too strong

what?

its too strong, they always do this

She is eating scrambled eggs with a teaspoon

i don't......

the tea

I don't like it so strong.

She sits at the next table.

Three stems of faded lavender wrapped in foil hang from her collar

Her left hand rests in her lap under the table.

She lays down the spoon and sips her tea

There is a small split in the seam of her coat

under the arm

i could get you another

she has unusually large hands

I am not sure she has been speaking to me

she doesn't look up.

I notice that her feet don't touch the ground

my toast and tea arrive.

she stares hard at my cup.
