My Love

by Jane

It was ever thus my love,

the pain of love we bear.

You, who may cast me up

and so may cast me down.

With sweetly tender gentle smile

or storm-laden gathering frown.

Whose laugh can fill my heart with joy -

whose words of anger just destroy.

My wish for love and tenderness,

plundered and beaten in my breast.

When love takes you to the heights,

it sends you crashing to the floor.

It was ever thus.

My love.
