Beware of Wolf

by Brian Dunlop

Tim and John are twin brothers, they are both going to go to separate colleges and decide to go camping to remember their childhood and the good times they spent together before they go off to college the next day, they also decide upon bringing their dog with them which they had since a puppy, ten years ago. Unfortunately, Tim and John pick the wolf infested Yellow Creek Forrest to set up their campsite. This is where the story begins.

"How am I suppose to do this?", says Tim a fare haired young man, who stood about six feet tall. "Didn't dad ever teach you how to pitch a tent?", says John, a dark haired young man, who stood around six feet, two inches. "Yeah, but I can't remember. I haven't gone camping since I was thirteen in the boy scouts", says Tim. "Well, I still remember how to pitch a tent and I was in the boy scouts", says John. "Well, I didn't stay in the boy scouts until I was seventeen like you did", says Tim. "Hey, I liked helping out the kids", says John. "Well, it made you look like a fag", says Tim. "What all because I was doing something admirable, it makes me a fag?", says John. "As a matter of fact it does", says Tim. "Eh, shut up, okay I'll set up your tent for you", says John. John then successfully pitches Tim's tent for him. "Now, that wasn't so hard", says John. "Yeah, maybe for you. I'm not into this whole camping and outdoors thing", says Tim. "I can see that", says John. "Where's Lucky?", says Tim. "I don't know. Wasn't paying any attention," says John. "Lucky?", says Tim seeing if their dog Lucky can hear them. Lucky then walks out of John's tent. Lucky's fur was of dark brown and he had shiny brown eyes that would glisten in the sunlight. "Oh there he is", says John. "God damn dog, probably gonna get fur all over my sleeping bag." "What are we going to feed him?", says Tim. "You bring any food?" "Yeah, I brought plenty.", says John. John then unzipped his fanny pack he had around his waste, took out a doggy treat and threw it up in the air where the dog then jumped up and caught it, with his mouth. "Having a fanny pack is mad gay", says Tim. "Shut up man, it's very handy", says John. "It still looks gay, you should just put your things in your pockets", says Tim. "I can't fit all of them in there, so I use a fanny pack, nothing wrong with that", says John. "Yeah, if you're a homo", says Tim. "Shut up son, I've gotten way more girls in my life than you", says John. "What, the little girl scouts?", says Tim. "Well at least I had girlfriends", says John. "Hey man, it's not my fault, I just haven't found the right girl, yet", says Tim. "You haven't found any girl", says John. "Shut up", says Tim. "Well it looks like one of us is going to have to get wood for the campfire", says John. "It ain't me", says Tim. "Okay then, let's draw straws. The one with the small straw has to go out to get the campfire wood", says John. "Draw straws?", says Tim. John then took two straws from his fanny pack and ripped one in half and placed it firmly in his closed fist. "What the fuck? What you got straws in there, too?", says Tim. "Yep", says John. "Why?", says Tim. "I don't know, it might come in handy sometime," says John. "Whatever, pretty weird if you ask me", says Tim. "Shut up and draw your straw", says John. Tim then drew a straw from John's hand. The straw was short. "Well it looks like you got the short straw, go on and get the wood, bitch", says John. "Whatever, I don't care, you probably cheated anyway", says Tim. "Bye", says John. Tim then walked off into the woods in search of fire wood.

As Tim walked through the woods, he collected sticks and branches from the ground to use as fire wood. He walked deeper and deeper into the woods because the sticks and branches he was collecting was in no way comparable to thick logs where people wood usually use as camp fire wood and such a small amount of wood wouldn't make the fire last very long. He walked onward into the woods murmuring to himself that, he had to go collect fire wood, not his brother. He felt John probably cheated and knew that he gave him the short straw, so he would have to go out to get some fire wood. Tim walked deeper and deeper into the woods and saw a shaking bush up ahead, but thought no mind to it because he thought, it's probably a squirrel or a rabbit or something. Tim walked onward, closer and closer to the shaking bush, until a growling wolf jumped out of the bush, staring down Tim with menacing eyes. Tim froze in fear. Fearing that the slightest movement would trigger the wolf to go off and attack him, killing him on the spot. Still the wolf stood there, posed in a position of that of a wild beast ready to pounce on it's prey. Tim knew that the slightest movement and any sign of fear would trigger the rabbet wolf to attack him, so he did not move. Tim looked into the wolf's eyes, but not for too long as in that would provoke the creature. The wolf had dark brown fur, similar to Tim's dog Lucky and also had multiple colored eyes, one brown and one blue, but within those eyes he saw no kindness. Only rage and evil, septet through the wolf's eyes, glaring at Tim, comptomplating when the right time to attack would be and how he would attack. Foam dripped from the wolf's sharp, razor like fangs and jaws as he stared Tim down. A bead of sweat dripped down Tim's forehead onto his right cheek. The wolf could sense the fear radiating off from Tim and that only made the wolf more anxious to make his attack. The bush shook. Five wolves came out of the bush and stood behind the wolf of blue and brown eyes. They all looked equally as menacing, all wanted to kill Tim and devour his flesh. The six wolves stepped forward towards Tim. Tim knew if he didn't do anything, he'd surely die by these vicious wolves. Tim put his hands back and threw all the fire wood that he had collected from the forest at the six wolves, stunning them. This was Tim's chance, his chance from escaping from the wolves, alive. Tim ran. Ran as fast as he could. The effects of the fire wood hitting against the wolves heads and bodies didn't seem of much effect to them because only moments later, they were chasing after Tim in pursuit of him filling the void in their hungry bellies. Tim ran and ran, his heartbeat racing. The wolves were fast, faster than Tim and if Tim haven't had got the head start that he had, the wolves would of surely got to him. Tim ran faster, not looking back at the six wolves, wanting his very life. The wolves mouths foamed heavily as they ran, thinking of Tim not of as a human being, but as a meal. Tim felt a cramp in his side, but not for once did he think of slowing down because they would mean his very death. He ran, his heart racing, his lungs feeling as if they were about to collapse trying to out run the rabbet wolves and to get to safety. He ran and up ahead he saw a clearing behind some trees and bushes. He saw his campsite and felt relieved, but then thought that he has just brought the very same fate to his own brother. How is he going to make a difference? Tim ran into the clearing where the campsite was, the wolves following behind him. "Oh my God", says John. Just as the wolves were about to make quick work of John and Tim, Lucky jumped out in front them. Lucky stared down all six wolves, fiercely. No fear was in Lucky's eyes as he stared down the wolves, only instinct and anger. These wolves were just about to kill the two men who have taken care of him since he was a puppy and Lucky wasn't going to stand for it, he was going to fight, no matter the odds. Lucky barked and barked, angrily at the wolves. With each bark sounding more threatening than the next. The wolves stepped back and Lucky stepped forward, closer, closer to the demon like wolves. Like cowards, the wolves turned back and Lucky ran full speed at them making the wolves run into the woods, Lucky trailing behind them on pursuit.

Darkness fell on the campsite, a once lit sky now turned to dusk. "Holy shit", says John. "I'm getting the fuck out of here. There's no way I'm going to spend another second in these woods." "No", says Tim. "We have to stay here and wait till Lucky comes back." "Who cares about Lucky", says John. "He's gone. These wolves will come back and kill us, we better leave. I mean who's more important Lucky or us?" "The wolves won't come back", says Tim. "They won't come back because Lucky scared them off and besides they're dumb wolves, they won't remember where our campsite is." "We better leave", says John. "Or do you want to be eaten by those wolves?" "Okay", says Tim. "How are we going to leave? It's completely dark out and we have better chances of surviving out here at the campsite than out there in the woods. Besides, it's about a thirty minute hike back to the car and there's probably a lot more wolves out there than the wolves we've seen and probably a lot more dangerous and besides isn't the number one thing about surviving is if you're lost then you should stay where you are in the risk of making your problem worse." "Well, you're right, but we're not really lost, I know how to get back to the car from here and we have a flash light to guide us through the dark woods", says John. "Yeah, but we could encounter another pack of dangerous, killer wolves and we won't have Lucky to scare them off, so we better stay here and stick it out 'till morning and then leave, with or without Lucky if necessary", says Tim. "Yeah, I agree. For once you're right Tim, never thought of you to be one of those smart types", says John. "Yeah, well this is a serious situation. No bull shit", says Tim. "I wonder what dad would of done in this situation? He was always a good outdoorsman", says John. "Well, I think this is a situation that even dad couldn't get out of. I mean we're in some deep shit, right here. Those wolves almost killed us", says Tim. "True. Imagine if we didn't bring Lucky along with us", says John. "Those wolves would of torn us to pieces", says Tim. "Yeah, I think I'm not going to go to sleep, tonight", says John. "Yeah, me too", says Tim. "You think we should start a campfire, you know to forgot about all this and have a good time and eat shmores and tell ghost stories like the old times, the reason why we came here in the first place." "Hell no", says John. "We don't need something to attract those wolves to come over here again. We don't want to take any risks, it's either life or death and I don't want to die." "Yeah, you're right", says Tim. "I don't know about you, but all these things about the wolves are making me want to take a piss." "Go ahead", says John. Tim walked up to the nearest bush and unzipped his zipper on his pants and urinated on the bush. While urinating, Tim couldn't help, but feel that he was being watched from deep in the dark, dark forest, but didn't think of it again as he joined his brother, sitting at a log by the dark campfire. A howl is heard in the distance. "I wonder if that's Lucky", says John.

The night grew darker and darker and John and Tim sat there feeling fatigued and waiting for their dog Lucky to return. Even though, they were both tired, they decided to stay up the whole night until morning in fear of having another encounter with the wolves while they are sleeping and most vulnerable. "John, I'm tired. Can we both take turns staying up and one of us sleeps and the other stays guard?", says Tim. "No", says John. "Too risky, we must always be up and ready if the wolves ever come back and we have to run." "Yeah, but I'm tired, man, I need to get some sleep or I'll pass out", says Tim. "Shut up. You want to live, right?", says John. "Yeah", says Tim. "Then, shut up", says John. "Whatever", says Tim. "What you think happened to Lucky? Do you think the wolves killed him or what?" "I don't know", says John. "Hope he comes back. He's a great dog." "No doubt", says Tim. "Amazing, how he scared all those wolves off like that. Didn't think he had it in him." "Well Lucky does have animal instincts because his ancestors use to probably live in some kind of forest, too like these wolves, fighting off predators and killing other animals for food, so he does know how to defend himself and protect his masters", says John. "Yeah, but how was six vicious wolves afraid of Lucky?", says Tim. "Well, probably because these wolves usually attack those who are weak and easy to kill and Lucky showed no fear against these wolves and these wolves sense and attack those who are afraid of them as easy targets which Lucky did not display. He took it right to the wolves and shit", says John. "Yeah, that is one brave dog. I almost shit my pants when those wolves jumped out of the bush and grilled at me hardcore", says Tim. "What exactly happened out there with the wolves when you were getting fire wood?", says John. "Well, I was walking through the woods collecting stuff like twigs, branches and sticks off the ground for fire wood...", says Tim. "Uh huh", says John interrupting. "...Then I see a shaking bush and I think to myself, it's probably a squirrel or a rabbit or something and then out jumped a wolf that has one brown eye and one blue eye and it is staring at me with teeth showing and glaring at me like he's going to attack. I was like oh shit, I'm going to die and then five more wolves jump out of the bush and are also glaring at me, showing their teeth and I was like I'm getting the fuck out of here, so I threw all the sticks, branches and twigs I collected at the six wolves and jetted the fuck out of there. I didn't think I was going to make it and I felt a cramp in my side and thought I couldn't go on much longer and I was going to die and be eaten by the wolves, but then I saw our campsite overhead and I push forth a little more until I got there and then Lucky jumped out and defended me", says Tim. "Shit man", says John. "Sorry that happened to you. If we get out of this alive, I'm never going camping again or go back into the woods again. Fuck the great outdoors, I don't need this shit." "True that, man. I'm never going to go near anywhere remotely like the forest, not even if there's no wolves there. I hope we can make it through this, man. This is some pretty hardcore shit. We got fucking rabbet wolves here trying to eat us, man. This isn't some fucking Little Red Ridding Hood fairytale, this is the real world. If we don't think of something to get out of this quick then there ain't gonna be no happy ending to this", says Tim. "Well, the best idea now is to stick it out for the night and leave in the morning when it's less dangerous and we can make it through the woods back to our car easier if we encounter some more wolves out there in the woods because we can see where we're going in the daytime even if we have a flash light, so we don't risk falling in the dark and be eaten by wolves", says John. "Yeah, plus if Lucky comes back before morning then, we could use him for protection on our way back against any other wolves who try to attack us", says Tim. "Yeah man, we're in some pretty deep shit right now, but we'll make it out like we always did, you'll see and this will only be a memory", says John. "John, we've been through some tough times and we had our ups and downs in the past, but if we don't make it out of this alive or if one of us doesn't make it out of this alive, I want you to know, no matter all the bad things I've said in the past and no matter how many arguments what've had, you're still my brother and I love you", says Tim. "I love you, too", says John. "And don't worry we're going to make it out of this, you watch." John and Tim then embraced each other in a brotherly hug, both with tears in their eyes. "I love you, man. I was so scared", says Tim. "Don't worry man, soon this all will be over", says John. The bush shook. John and Tim instantly drew their attention to the shaking bush. Their minds racing thinking of the possibility of the six vicious wolves making the bush shake and that they will come out of the bush and kill Tim and John and devour their flesh. Shear terror was the expressions on Tim and John's faces as their starred at the shaking bush. A creature jumped out from behind the bush with dark brown fur. "Lucky", Tim and John instantly thought to themselves. Tim and John then felt a great deal of relief realising that it was in fact Lucky who was behind the bush, after all, not the six killer wolves. "Lucky!", says John and Tim at the same time. Lucky just stood there staring at them. Lucky had several wounds on him from his fight with the wolves and part of his left ear appeared to be bitten off. Before John and Tim was about to run over to their beloved dog Lucky to embrace him because they were so happy to see him, Lucky let off a series of barks at John and Tim and ran into the woods. "Lucky?", says John. "What the hell was that all about?", said Tim. "I don't know", says John. "He probably wants us to see something, we better follow him." "Okay then, let's go", says Tim. Tim and John then run into the woods after their dog Lucky, blissfully unaware of the events that follow.

"Where is he going?", says Tim. "I don't know, it must be important though", says John. Lucky ran full speed ahead and Tim and John are running after him. "What you think he wants us to see?", says Tim. "I don't know, he isn't acting like himself, so it must be something important", says John. "Maybe, he found a better way out of the woods", says Tim. "Maybe, let's follow him and see. As Tim and John were running through the woods after Lucky a branch smacks Tim in the face. "Fuck", says Tim. "What happened?", says John. "A branch just hit me in the face", says Tim. "Oh well, keep going, we have to see where Lucky is bringing us", says John. John and Tim kept running after Lucky until Lucky stopped next to a bush in a clearing. John and Tim make it up to where Lucky is in the clearing. There is a creature lying on the ground, but it is too dark out to see what it is. "What is that? Is that what Lucky wanted to show us?", says Tim. "I don't know, I'll take out my flash light and shine it on it", says John. John then unzipped his fanny pack and took out his flash light, turned it on and shinned it on the dark figure lying on the ground. "I think it's one of those wolves, it looks dead, Lucky probably killed it", says John. The creature lying on the ground has dark brown fur and resembles a wolf, it appears to have many wounds running up and down its body in which appears that it must of got in some sort of fight. "Wow, good job Lucky", says Tim. "Is this what Lucky wanted to show us?" "I guess so", says John. "Okay, Lucky looks like it's time to go back, we've seen your work and we're proud of you, now time to go back to the campsite and out of this God forsaken woods", says Tim. Lucky just stood there looking at John and Tim. "Lucky come over here", says Tim. Lucky didn't move. "God damn it, dog, come over here, we have to leave right now!", says Tim. Tim makes his way over to Lucky and Lucky growls at him. Tim went to grab Lucky, but Lucky viciously bit his hand. "Owww, what the fuck?!", says Tim shaking his hand in pain as blood dripped down his hand. "Jesus Christ. Lucky what is your problem?", says John. John shines his flash light on Lucky's face and it appears that Lucky has one blue eye and one brown eye. "Oh my God", says John. "What?", says Tim still shaking his bloody hand in pain unaware of what John just realised. "You said the wolf that tried to attack you had one blue eye and one brown eye, right?", says John. "Yes, why?", says Tim. "Well look at Lucky", says John. Tim looked at Lucky's face and froze with fear in that he realised that this wasn't Lucky at all, Lucky was the creature that was lying dead on the forrest ground, this was one of the killer wolves who chased him and wanted to eat his flesh. "Holy shit", said Tim. The wolf stepped forward, grawling, his teeth showing and white, soapy foam dripping from his razor sharp teeth and jaws. John and Tim were so overwhelmed with fear that they could not move. The bush shook. Out jumped five vicious wolves with the same goal as the wolf of blue and brown eyes and that is to kill Tim and John and eat their flesh. The six wolves stepped forward, all showing their teeth and foaming at the mouth. "What am I going to do?", thought John to himself. Then John had an idea. John then took the flash light he was holding and flung it at the wolves, stunning them. In an instant, John and Tim took off as fast as they could, but not to the direction of their camp site, but in the opposite direction, hoping to find refuge there.

The dark sky opened up and rain poured to the ground. Thunder is heard in the distance. The effect of John's throwing his flash light at the wolves did little effect as in they are now chasing after him and his brother, Tim. Tim and John ran, ran as fast as they could through the forrest, soaked in water from head to toe because of the rain with the wolves trailing behind them on pursuit. "What are we going to do?", says Tim. "I don't know", says John. "Just keep running and don't stop." A clap of thunder is heard in the distance. Even though neither Tim nor John turned around to look back at the six vicious wolves, they could hear them, their paws against the wet, soggy, dirty forrest ground, they could hear them breathing aniciously, heaivly, dying to catch John and Tim and have a feast from their dead, bloody corspes. The rain poured hardier and hardier, but didn't stop John and Tim nor the wolves from their nonstop running. The hearts in John and Tim's chest felt like they were going to explode, their heart beat feeling like it is going a hundred miles per hour. "I'm sorry", says John out of breath. "Why?", says Tim. "For getting us in this situation in the first place. I wanted us to go camping and you only wanted to go on a road trip with our friends. It's all my fault", says John. "No it isn't. It's not your fault. No one could of predictied this", says Tim. Tim and John run pass a tree, lightning strikes the tree and it falls on a wolf, killing it. "Holy shit! That was close", says John in response from the lightning hitting the tree and it colasping, although unaware of the death of one of the wolves. Tim and John were running so hard that they felt like they were going to collaspe and they couldn't go on much longer. The wolves behind them, didn't show any signs of being tired, no fatigue was in the wolves hungry faces, they ran like a machine, nonstop, they wouldn't stop until they could claim victims of Tim and John and eat them. An abandoned cabin is upahead. "Look John. A cabin", says Tim. Tim and John make it up to the abandoned cabin, the wolves not trailing far behind and John tried to open the door, but it is locked. "The doors locked!", says John. "Well, bust it open", says Tim. Tim and John put forth all the strength that they have left in their tired bodies and slam their bodies as hard as they could up against the door. The door swings open. Tim and John enter the abandoned cabin. The wolves run ever closer to the cabin, almost reaching the cabin door. "Close the door!", said Tim. John tried to close the door, but one of the wolves heads get caught in the door while it was almost closed. The wolf's fur on it's head was covered in blood, either his blood or Lucky's blood and his eye's were blood shot red, just dying to get in the cabin, so he could make a meal of John and Tim. Tim kicks the wolf's head and the wolf and it's head go back outside the cabin. John slams the door. Now the wolves are throwing their bodies up against the door, trying to gain entry to the cabin. John holds his body up against the door, preventing the wolves from getting in. "Tim! Put something against the door, so the wolves don't get in!", said John. The cabin is almost barren, except for a bookcase with various books on display on it's four shelves and a small stove with an opened door with coal inside. Tim then pushed the bookcase over to John and John pushed it up against the door. Then Tim pushed the stove to John and John put it in front of the bookcase. The wolves continued to throw their bodies up against the cabin door, but it would be of no effect because of the bookcase and stove blocking their entry into the cabin to get Tim and John.

Hours has passed and still the wolves persistently waited at the cabin door, although they're not throwing their bodies up against the door anymore because they realized it's to no use and John and Tim are going to have to go back outside the cabin eventually. Tim looks out the small window in the cabin next to the door. "What are they doing?", says Tim. "They're waiting", says John. "Why don't they just give up? It's been hours. They should of gaven up on us and looked for something else to hunt for, a long time ago", says Tim. "I know man, it's like they're possessed or something. I don't know if they'll ever stop", says John. "Yeah, just look at their eyes", says Tim. John then looks out the window at the wolves. The wolves are still there, waiting, white, soapy foam dripped from their mouths and their eyes are of beet red, almost glowing in the dark. "It looks like their eyes are blood shot", says John. "Nah man, their eyes are beyond blood shot, look they're glowing", says Tim. "I know, I see", says John. "How are we going to get out of this one?", says Tim. "No clue", says John. "We'll just wait it out, they'll have to leave eventually." "I hope so", says Tim.

Many more hours have passed, the wolves are still waiting outside the cabin and the rain poured harder and harder upon the cabin roof. "They're never going to stop waiting", says John. "What makes you say that?", says Tim. "It's been five hours and they still haven't left yet, they won't go unless they get what they want", says John. "No, John, come on, they'll leave eventually. Just keep your hopes up", says Tim. "These aren't average wolves we're dealing with", says John. "They are demon wolves, just look at their eyes." The eyes of the wolves outside the cabin were glowing even more, a red glow is visible in the dark, rainy night outside the cabin. "They're smartier then an average wolf", says John. "They tricked us and lead us into a trap. Any other wolf would of attacked us right when they saw us if they were a rabbet wolf, but this wolf, no, he knew what he was doing. He lead us into a trap and his friends were hiding in the bushes, waiting for the go ahead to come out and attack." "What are you getting at?", says Tim. "This means the only way to get out of this alive is if one of us distracts the wolves", says John. "No John, we'll just wait here a little longer. I bet in a few hours the wolves will be gone and we will be able to go home", says Tim. "These wolves are never going to leave. They'll stay until we starve to death in this cabin", says John. "So, how are we going to decide which one of us goes out and distracts the wolves?", says Tim. "We draw straws", says John. John then unzips his fanny pack and takes out two straws and rips one in half and places it tightly in his closed fist. "The one with the small straw has to go out and distract the wolves. Choose.", says John. A bead of sweat dripped down Tim's forehand as he chose a straw from John's hand. Tim drew a long straw, meaning that John had the short straw and had to go outside and distract the wolves. "I guess it's going to be me", says John. "No, come on John, we'll just wait it out for a little bit longer, the wolves will leave you'll see", says Tim. "I have to do what I have to", said John. "If I don't go outside to distract the wolves they'll never leave. You'll thank me for this." "You sure about this?", says Tim. "Yes", says John. "Okay then. Good luck and remember death is not a option.", says Tim. "I will", says John. Tim then crept slowly to the door and removed the stove and bookcase blocking the door. "Remember, if you don't make it out of this, I love you", says Tim. "I love you, too", says John. John and Tim then hugged with tears in their eyes. "Good-bye", says John. John then opens the door to the cabin and closes it behind him. John walks a few steps before being tackled by the pack of five, vicious wolves. The wolves ripped at John's skin, tearing at his flesh and his flesh slowly sliding down the wolves throats. John is screaming, franticly as the wolves bite him, eating him. Tim then opens the door to the cabin slowly and makes it out of the cabin and closes the door behind him. The wolves are already preoccupied by his brother, John, so they don't even notice Tim leaving the cabin. Tim then walks down the trail out of the forrest, escaping from the wolves, alive, although the memory of the sound of the wolves ripping at his brother, John's flesh and his screaming as the wolves ate him alive will remain in Tim's mind until the day he dies.
