Cupcake

by Jillian Lane

It smells like winter and happy endings

It's after midnight I'm more forgiving

You say it's trite

And I'm never right

But you always leave your heart

To my mending

When you wanna give up the fight

We pass through corridors

Of broken doors

that house the ghosts

left from our wars

and you seem so tall

when you're falling down

I wanna scream

But can't make a sound

You say forget about the past

Meeting old friends

We walk through cemetaries

Filled with versions of ourselves

That didn't last

And you say it doesn't matter

Who we used to be

But I say it's everything

It's everything to me

Our future's built

From the lives we used to lead
