On the Run From Myself

by Meila Turple

Preface

This short story was made or expired by The Outsiders, and that was then this is now. I always love the character mark in That Was Then This Is Nowand give me the idea to make my own mark but in my way and make him like me.

I was coming back from school, and I stopped by the gas station to steal some snacks for fun because I had nothing else better to do. When I go there, I usually get compliments on my looks, but I guess there weren't a lot of people around because a new drive-in just opened up.

I have dark brown hair and dark blue eyes. I usually wear a brown leather jacket, dark blue jeans, and brown cowboy boots.

As I walk up to the gas station, a red Mustang pulls up to me. I looked through the cracked-open windows and the driver's seat. I realized it was the socs that jumped me one day, coming back from school.

One of the greasers was named Chris. I know that was him because he used to be one of us–a greaser, but only until his parents won the lottery. Which got to their head,d and especially Chris' head, always thinking that he was better than everyone else, but no one ever noticed him; it was like he wasn't even there. At least that's what he thinks.

As the four socs got out of the mustang, I saw that there were too many of them and not a single soul outside. So I got a horrid feeling that something was gonna go down.

One of the socs starts talking.

“What are you doing all out here by yourself?” his voice condescending.

“And where’s your little buddy that goes everywhere with you?” looking at me with an evil glare, smirking.

“Why does it matter to you anyway?”

“Not like you are in a rush to go see him,” I say, not realizing my voice was a little shaky.

His smirk got even wider.

"Looks like someone is a little scared.”

I realized then that they were gonna jump me then and there, no matter who saw it happen. So I ran as fast as I could, not gonna stop until my legs gave out. Then I realized what if I never see Roy again or maybe even get jumped by other socs, my mind raising lags getting weaker and chast heavier.

Then I fell near a forest and a dirty blue road sign that said ‘Welcome to brown lagoon’. I thought to myself,f “Where am I, never seen this place before!” As a grown man who looked in his 20s walked past him, I yelled

“How far and far from Pine Creek Ville?”

The man turned around and said, " Maybe around one hour.” I didn't realize that I ran for one hour

“Thanks, " I yell

“No problem,” he replied

I finally got my strength back and started to make a little fort for tonight.

As I was picking up some sticks with leaves and some branches, I saw in the distance a two-story house that looked like no one had lived there for a couple of years. So I dropped the sticks and branches and made my way to the house, thinking I could spend a few nights there. As I looked around, I was getting tired, so I went upstairs and made a little hideout in the bedroom closet to make sure that if someone came, they would not see me.

As three days passed,d I was starving. I was living off of berries I found in the woods and the old well beside the house. As I was getting ready to head back outside, I heard someone yelling. I thought it sounded familiar,r but I couldn't tell because it sounded far into the woods. Then it came closer than last time, and I stood shaken. I thought,t “How could this happen? Now I ran, how did they find me!?”

The yelling got closer, louder. As I peek through the broken window, I see them. The socs that were gonna jump me that morning at the gas station. I hid as quietly as possible, and as quickly as I could. I hid where I made my little hideout, the closet where no one would see me. As I heard them coming up the stairs, they went into the room three doors away. I decided to blot out the room, then go down the stairs. As I heard one of them say, “he’s getting away,y hurry, he's getting away!!!” I ran just as fast as the last time and was heading back to town. As they got in their Mustang, I heard a car five minutes in front of me. I ran in the middle of the street to make sure it stopped, but there was no time. Thesocs had already gotten out of the red mustang and started to pound and kick me. The car that was five minutes away from me stopped. It was Roy who ran up to me and started to yell, “Finny, are you ok? Stop freaking out,t there's no one here!!!” but they were kicking me. They were right here. I just didn't run away for nothing, did I? Then I looked up, and there was no one to be seen from a mile away. I thought to myself, “How could this be? I was just getting jumped by socs, how?”Then I asked Roy

“What do you mean they were just right here, they were kicking me, they made me feel like I broke all my bones!!!”

“What are you talking about?”

“There was no one here. I just saw you rolling on the ground, crying for help?”

Then it finally came to me. I was just like my mother; I was schizophrenic. I thought to myself, That was all in my head, that can't be that, felt too real to be in my head.”
