I recently returned from an incredible trip to Croatia. It was an especially big deal for me as it was the first time I had ever been out of the United States. Traveling aboard had been a dream of mine for a long time, but I never believed it would come to fruition until I got guidance from some close friends, along with planning and saving like I never had before. It was well worth it.
I took part of a travel group where two friends and I, along with four others, explored different cities in Croatia: Split, Hvar, Korcula and Dubrovnik. Each filled with its own rich history and unique surroundings. I loved the many museums we got to visit. My personal favorite was the Marco Polo Museum in Korcula, where many people there claim he was born, although that has been debated. Either way, it was fun learning more about him and his explorations. Another highlight was walking along the beautiful city walls of Dubronvik and learning that Croatia has the longest wall ever, behind China, named the Walls of Ston. Something to check out next time!
I got to experience many new things that I never do back home, like kayaking and going on a speed boat in the Adriatic Sea. Jumping off the speed boat, first with a life jacket, then working up the courage to jump into the crystal-clear sea water without a life jacket was a proud moment. I loved swimming into the caves at Red Rock. I’m not much of a beach person back home, but in Croatia, I definitely was. Got in a much-needed rest at one of the beaches along the way.
The people were incredible too. Our trip leader, Dina, who was born in Montenegro, answered all our questions and gave us many facts about each destination. She was personable, fun and had lot of wisdom. I want her to be my life coach back home. The travel company is for people around the same age, so everyone in the group bonded over similar stages in our lives we’re in. All of us live in the U.S., but I was the only one on my first trip outside our country. Also want to mention that my favorite tennis player/person, Novak Djokovic, is from Serbia, right next to Croatia. Making him an easy segue into conversations, and everyone there not only knew of him, but loved him too. I was told he’s a hero there, an amazing person, gives back a lot, and frequents the towns we were in often. I was among my people!
I’ll definitely keep the memories and adventures of my excursion close to me. I’m glad I pushed aside fears to make this happen. And what I thought was a once-in-a-lifetime trip has now become something I want to do as often as possible. I got the travel bug, and I can’t wait to explore new places.
