1. "The Party"
Sophomore Jason Selner single-handily carries the Ash Port High School soccer team to a state championship, the team's first in school history.
"I couldn't have done it without you believing in me," Jason grabbed his girlfriend, Bliss Cottrell, and pulled her into a tight hug, his lips kissing her hair, every few seconds.
(Flashback to the beginning of the year)
Jason struggles making the jump from the junior varsity to varsity soccer team, but finds inspiration from Bliss, who promises to cheer him on at practice every day to help him feel more comfortable and until he gets used to the higher level of competition and intensity.
(Flashback to present-day)
"You did it all by yourself Jason," Bliss grinned, hugging him back. "I was just along for the ride."
Bliss smiles at Jason and they kiss, as the credits roll.
Jenna Liverani comes up to Logan Ullman after the game.
"Sitting here all by yourself?" Jenna asked.
"Waiting for Warner to get done taking a leak and then we're outta here," Logan scanned the crowds impatiently for his friend.
"Fun," Jenna paused. "Listen, I'm having a party at my house to celebrate the soccer team's big win tonight, and I personally wanted to invite you to my party. Warner can come too if he wants."
"I don't think that would be the best idea considering what happened," Logan spat out. "It's still sinking in. I'm not ready to move on from it Jenna. I mean these were the first words we said to each other in a month."
(Logan throws his hands in the air)
"Now I know that was self-inflicted and that I told you to stay away, but we talked to each other every day for the last two and a half years. So to just go cold turkey like that was tough. You were like my nicotine, and to not get my fix of you for 30 days is something I never saw myself doing."
(Logan pauses and laughs to himself quietly)
"It seemed like an impossible task at the time," Logan looked up at Jenna again, meeting her wavering gaze. "But I had no choice. I had to have some sense of self-dignity. And I once again thank you for following through on those conditions I laid out of no speaking terms. It's something we both needed to do. I knew we would eventually speak to each other again one day; I just didn't think today would be that day. But now that it's finally here, I've realized that I still can't get past it and be your friend again. Not yet. I'm sorry."
(There was a moment's pause as Logan's speech sunk in)
"You don't have to be," Jenna replied. "We can just be 'door commenters' together."
"Door commenters?"
"Yeah, you know," Jenna moved her hands airily as she spoke. "Open the door when the doorbell rings, greet people, make comments about them when they're out of sight."
"I don't know, that seems kind of cruel."
"That's why you only make comments about people that deserve to be commented on," Jenna frowned. "Which is probably gonna be about 75 percent of my party considering we do live in Ash Port, but…"
"OK, fine," Logan tried to hide the smile appearing on his face. "I'll be a door commenter with you. If that's all I'll have to be."
"It is. I promise."
"And door commenters don't have to talk to people they don't want to talk to right?" Logan obviously was alluding to someone.
"Shouldn't be a problem," Jenna vowed.
"OK. I'll see you tonight then."
"See you tonight," Jenna gave Logan one last lingering look, before she walked away.
(Logan thinks to himself and smiles again, as the scene fades out)
Logan and his best friend, Warner Fredrick, are contemplating Logan's dilemma, back at his house.
"I don't think you should go to that party," Warner didn't give Logan the answer he wanted.
"Why not?" Logan grimaced.
"Because I know you Logan," Warner sighed. "I've been your best friend since the fourth grade, and I know that if something doesn't go your way at this party, you'll flip out, cause a scene and ruin everyone else's night. And considering this is supposed to be a huge celebration of our school's first state championship in any sport, I wouldn't imperil that if I were you."
"Are you going to this party?" Logan wondered.
"No," Warner flushed, as he looked away from Logan quickly. "I don't do so well in large groups of people."
"Pipa's gonna be there!" Logan teased.
"That may be the case, but I'm still not going," Warner was firm in his stance.
"You're gonna miss out on an opportunity to stalk the girl of your dreams?" Logan raised his eyebrows in amazement.
"First of all it's not stalking," Warner furiously corrected.
(Warner pauses when Logan gives him a look)
"OK, maybe it's a little stalking," Warner admitted. "But not full-on stalking "I'm not sending her creepy e-mails, or letters or phone calls or anything like that."
"I don't get it. You have no problem 'shadowing' her at school or at sporting events. They both have large groups of people at them."
"Because they are controllable events Logan!" Warner pointed out.
"What do you mean by 'controllable events?'" Logan was clueless.
"I mean there is no alcohol being drunk at them, no drugs being smoked or taken, at least not in the public eye," Warner clarified.
"You're weird, you know that?" Logan observed.
"You're just figuring that out now?" Warner threw Logan a disbelieving look.
"No," Logan leaned back. "But you're like really, really weird."
"Well thank you my furry friend," Warner riposted in an overexaggerated British accent.
"How the hell am I furry?"
"Nevermind that," Warner sat up straighter. "Let's get back to the topic at-hand here. Being you not going to this little shindig Jenna's holding."
"Yeah, about that," Logan pouted. "So why am I not going to this thing again?"
"Oh, I don't know. Maybe because you told Ben and Jenna that you never wanted to speak to either of them again!"
"I never said that Warner!" Logan muttered defensively.
"Oh, my bad," Warner placed his hand over his heart. "You said you never wanted anything to do with them again. Sorry for the little mix-up there. I see how it can make a difference in the meaning of the words!"
"OK, maybe I did say that," Logan acknowledged. "But after seeing our boy Jason do our school proud today, I realized something. I realized that life's too short to hold grudges or keep enemies with those you really care about, because you could be missing out on something special or great with that person."
"Does that mean you've forgiven both Ben and Jenna for what they did?" Warner inquisitively posed.
"No," Logan retorted. "It means I accept what Ben and Jenna did as a reality and that I've chosen to call a truce with Jenna. Nothing more and nothing less. At least for now."
"What happened to life's too short to keep enemies, grudges?"
"For those I really care about Warner," Logan didn't appreciate Warner mocking his own words, giving him a look. "And I really care about Jenna, so I'm giving her another chance to redeem herself at this party."
"And what about Ben?" Warner speculated. "You remember him: short, blonde hair, average height, eyes as blue as 'Blue Moon' ice cream, person that was eventually going to succeed me as your bff."
"Warner, come on buddy," Logan laughed. "You know that no one would ever replace you as my best friend. Unless you say the words 'bff' when mentioning our friendship again. This isn't Gossip Girl here. And if you say 'XO XO,' I'm gonna have to ask you to leave my house and never come back again."
"Gotcha," Warner beamed.
"Now, back to me here."
"I would expect no less."
"Good," Logan rolled his eyes. "Jenna's the one who came up to me when you were in the biffy to try to set things straight no less than an hour ago Warner. So I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt. I'm giving Ben nothing because he did utterly nil except destroy my friendship/relationship with my soulmate. Jenna's my Joey, and I'm her Dawson, and that's the way it'll always be."
"Well, that's bad news for you Logan, because Joey chose Pacey in the end," Warner jogged Logan's memory.
"That's where you're wrong Warner!" Logan exclaimed. "Joey chose Dawson, but Dawson told her to be with Pacey because Jen died and he really didn't care anymore."
"Well, that's your interpretation Logan. Not mine, or the other 'PJers' out there. Just because you were one of the rare few who liked Dawson with Joey, doesn't mean you can twist the ending of that show to fit your storyline here."
"How sad is it that we know all this stuff about girlie shows?"
"It's actually pretty gay Logan. Good thing we're into women."
"I know I am. You on the other hand I question. Never had a girlfriend, never been kissed."
"Yeah, but my weird obsession over all things Pipa would disperse of that argument chief," Warner harked back.
"Then prove it," Logan shouted, jumping up. "Go to this party and lay a big smacker on Pipa. Show your manliness my boy!"
"God, you're so clueless Logan! My connection with Pipa is about romance. You don't just kiss her without her own volition!"
"And why's that?"
"Because you don't kiss a girl like Pipa Harris. Pipa Harris kisses you."
"Well either way, I'm going to this party. Maybe I'll be doing some kissing of my own tonight."
"Dream on Dawson. Dream on."
"So, you coming?"
"Nah," Warner decided after a moment's thought. "I think I'll sit at home and watch some Kung-Fu movies or something instead."
"By Kung-Fu movies do you mean chick flicks?"
"In all likelihood yes."
"You're such a softie."
"Everywhere but the ding dong," Warner raised his hand to Logan. "Good luck tonight."
"Way too much information, but thank you for the wish of good fortune. I shall need it."
(Fast-forward to the party)
Danny Peterson tries to convince two freshmen girls to have a threesome with him at the party.
"Come on it'll be fun," Danny insisted. "Something you can tell your grandkids about someday."
"Who would say something like that?" one of the girls, named Reema, questioned.
"I'm sorry, did I offend you?" Danny faked regret. "Because I would never do anything to hurt you two gorgeous young lads. Look, you want to make a name for yourselves at this school, don't you?"
"Not as a slut," the other girl, named Ashley, indicated.
"I promise that won't happen," Danny gave his word. "It'll be quick, but not that quick of course, it'll be painless, for the most part anyway, and it'll be on the DL."
"Disabled List?" Reema tried to figure out what the abbreviation meant.
"Down-Lo," Danny rectified. "Or as I like to call it, the 'Danny-Lo.' I would never tell anyone about this. It'd just be between us three."
"That's what all guys say," Ashley wasn't about to fall for Danny's tricks so easily. "Then you become gossip fodder."
"Well I'm not all guys, am I?" Danny turned Ashley's words around on her. "I'm just one. One you have the chance to have an once-in-a-lifetime experience with. I have nothing but deference for you two."
"I don't know what that word means," Reema glared. "But it suggests that you're intelligent. I like intelligent guys. What do you say Ashley?"
"Lock the door," Ashley was adamant about her stipulation. "And this stays between us."
"Of course," Danny promised.
(Danny goes to lock the door)
"Us and the whole school," Danny murmured under his breath so the two girls couldn't hear him. "Let's get it started in here."
Nicki Oswald tries her best to seduce Ben Bessert, but Ben isn't buying her act, fully remembering that she rejected him at the beginning of the school year.
"Can't a girl have a change of heart?" Nicki asked.
"Yes they can, but not you," Ben glowered. "Someone as manipulative as you only has a change of heart when they want something else or something bigger in the grander scheme of things. Plus, I know why you're going after me now."
"Enlighten me Ben on what that reason may be."
"You either want me now for one of three reasons: You're drunk and will take any guy at this point, to try to make Logan jealous or get under his skin, or because I'm taken now and you enjoy the thrill of chasing 'forbidden fruit,'" Ben listed, counting off his fingers. "Or maybe, just maybe, you're doing it for all three reasons. Either way, I'm not falling for your routine."
"We'll see Ben," Nicki whispered seductively. "You know I love how everyone pretends to be all innocent and 'halo-worthy.' But the truth is, everyone is exactly like me; they just go about their deceitfulness in a more discreet way."
"You couldn't be more wrong," Ben muttered with force.
"Oh really? Then why is Jenna having such a grand ole' time with Logan over there when she's suppose to be with you?"
(Nicki points toward Logan and Jenna, who are laughing and harmlessly flirting with each other)
(Nicki evilly smiles, and leaves Ben to ponder what she just said)
Pipa, Alessandra Klover and Amanda Gingrich all attend Jenna's party, and Logan and Jenna comment on each of them drifting apart from Jenna.
"Pipa took what her sisters' said literally when they said they had to stick together if they were going to survive their parents' divorce, so she has hung out with them more and more and with me and my friends' less and less," Jenna told Logan. "When Pipa is happy now, nine out of 10 times it's because she is drunk, otherwise she's mostly just this really depressed person.
"Alessandra let the role of being a co-captain on the 'pomleaders' go to her head, and she distanced herself from me and my friends' because she thinks she is better than us now, and she also can manipulate and control what most of her team thinks because they are afraid to stand up to her.
"Amanda also thinks she is better than me and my friends', which basically consists of Bliss and a bunch of guy friends' now, ever since she started to model on a more regular basis.
"The only reason why Pipa, Alessandra and Amanda attended my party is because they wouldn't miss the opportunity for free booze, and particularly in Amanda and Alessandra's case, free guys'."
"Sorry, that really sucks," Logan mumbled, unsure of what to say next, as he scanned the room, noticing various people, such as his neighbor, Hayley Brown, a junior, and her best friend, Ana Wade.
"I wish I never met Alessandra," Jenna groaned.
"Yeah, me too," Logan concurred.
"Who knows, if it wasn't for Alessandra, we'd probably still be together," Jenna noted, giving Logan a pointed glance.
(Logan gives Jenna an 'I can't believe you just said that look')
"What's wrong?" Jenna saw Logan grit his teeth, as he began to move further away from her.
"Alessandra may have plagued us in the past, but she is not the reason we broke up!" Logan stated hastily, clearly pissed off. "It was you and it was Ben."
(Logan starts to walk away from Jenna before stopping and turning half back to her)
"I'd thought by now you'd be willing to admit that," Logan paused for a moment, and then snickered. "I guess I was wrong."
(Logan takes a swig from his cup of beer, throws it in the nearby bin and then walks away)
Jenna realizes she just screwed up, but Logan is already gone.
"Pipa I love that jacket!" Bliss gushed.
"Thanks," Pipa spun around in the jacket, proudly flaunting it off. "Got it on sale at Target. Last one."
"Aw you suck!" Bliss stuck her bottom lip out. "Well enjoy the party. See you later."
"Yeah you too," Pipa waved goodbye. "Later."
"Did you get anywhere with Ben yet?" Kristi Royce, Nicki's best friend, inquired after coming up to her at the party.
(Nicki shakes her head 'No')
"Maybe you should just give up then," Kristi suggested. "He does have a girlfriend after all."
"That didn't stop him when Jenna was with Logan," Nicki recollected, as she took a drink out of her cup of vodka.
"OK, maybe not," Kristi admitted. "But this time it would be his heart getting broken."
"You're my best friend Kristi and I love you," Nicki placed her hand on Kristi's shoulder. "But sometimes, you just don't get it; you're clueless."
(Nicki starts to walk away)
"Nicki!" Kristi yelled, stopping her. "I think I do get it. You're the one whose heart's broken."
"Good guess."
"Right guess," Kristi remarked, and she walked away from Nicki.
(Nicki walks up to Ben again)
"Have you changed your way of thinking yet Ben?"
"No," Ben looked away in disgust.
"You have a great opportunity to get lucky for once tonight with me, and the best part is, nobody has to know about it, especially not little miss angel Jenna," Nicki taunted him, trying to get closer.
"Yeah, like you wouldn't jibber-jabber to Jenna about it?" Ben sarcastically spoke.
"I won't, I pinky swear," Nicki blinked rapidly, followed by her 'trademark' wicked smile.
"Give it a rest already Nicki," Ben snapped, at this point fed up. "Why don't you find someone of your own species to screw? I heard Danny was available."
"Sorry, but even I have my own limits," Nicki shuddered at the thought.
"If that were true, you would know that you already crossed them by suggesting what you want to do with me. Because if you really wanted to be Jenna's friend like you've been 'trying' to do lately, you wouldn't even think of betraying Jenna like that."
"It's a funny thing that you say that, because you did precisely the same thing to Logan," Nicki spat out.
"Jenna and I kissed a few times and that was it, then we eventually told Logan about what we did and actually showed some remorse for it," Ben glared. "Unlike you Nicki, who obviously wouldn't give a crap how heartbroken Jenna would be if you and I slept together, because in the end, only you would benefit from it. I'm not sleeping with you Nicki, and there's nothing you can do about it. So just leave me, and if you know what's good for you, Logan and Jenna, alone."
(Ben walks away)
"That's what you think," Nicki garbled to herself.
Logan runs into his ex-friend Jeff Hill at the party.
"Hey Jeff, how's it going?" Logan awkwardly saluted.
"For me?" Jeff ran his fingers through his hair and smirked. "Pretty good. For you? Probably not so much."
"What makes you say that?"
"Well I heard about you, Jenna and Ben," Jeff cackled. "It sucks, doesn't it, to be betrayed by a friend? I can only imagine what it feels like to be betrayed by two friends. Oh wait…Come talk to me when you've had four of your friends turn their backs on you, and then another one shortly after."
"Look Jeff I…" Logan started.
"Save it," Jeff cut Logan off before he could finish. "I'm not in the mood. Maybe next time when I tell you something, you'll listen. Say hi to Mike, Warner and Jason for me, and if you have the chance, Jeremy too. Or better yet, don't. It's not like they'll notice or care anyway."
(A very bitter Jeff finally walks away from Logan)
Logan then runs into another former friend in Jeremy Laehn.
"Hi Jeremy," Logan looked around. "You just missed Jeff."
"Yeah, that was kind of the point," Jeremy bluntly whispered.
"Do you maybe want to sit down and talk about things later?"
"Thanks, but I'll pass," Jeremy looked like he was in a rush. "Say hi to Mike, Warner and Jason for me."
(Jeremy then walks away from Logan)
Jenna eventually finds Logan outside on her swing in the backyard.
"I need to apologize to you Logan for about a million things," Jenna held her hands up in an illumination mode. "Firstly, what Ben and I did to you was absolutely wrong and there's no excuse for it. Secondly, the reason I said what I said about Alessandra was to just 'shoot the breeze' and try to eliminate the awkwardness that was occurring between us all night."
"We never use to have awkwardness," Logan reminisced, longing for the past.
"I know."
"What happened that made us 'awkward friends?'"
"That tends to occur Logan when you date each other's friends'," Jenna started to blush. "Although I never admitted it, it was incredibly uncomfortable for me when you and Bliss dated last year, and all the times before that. That's why I kind of understand what you're going through right now, which is exactly why you need to take as much time as you require in getting use to me and Ben, and if you don't want to be friends with me, Ben or either of us anymore, I understand."
"Are you crazy?" Logan leered. "You'll always be my friend no matter what happens between us or who comes between us. We just may need some space from each other once in a while when the going gets tough."
(Jenna and Logan share a friendly hug and walk back into the party together)
"Am I crazy to think you and Ben will become friends again too?" Jenna cleared her throat while walking back with Logan into her house.
"Sort of," Logan came clean. "But I wouldn't commit you to a mental institution just yet. If that makes any sense."
(Jenna cracks a smile and understandingly nods)
(Toward the end of the night, the party starts to die down and almost everyone who remains has had more than their fair share of alcohol. Ben takes a drink from his cup and sets it down on the table next to him. He stares at Mike Sparrows and Jason across the room, who are laughing with each other)
"Why don't you just go and talk to them?" Nicki sneakily approached Ben and put something into his drink without him noticing.
"I don't think that's really any of your business Nicki," Ben continued to stare at his former friends without turning around to face her.
"Come on," Nicki quickly stirred the substance she dropped into Ben's drink so it would dissolve. "Work with me here. Help me help you young blonde Tom Cruise."
"Jason and Mike are giving me the 'Logan treatment,'" Ben whipped around to finally face Nicki.
"What's the 'Logan treatment'?"
"Trying their best to pretend that I don't exist," Ben grabbed his cup from the table and chugged down the rest of his drink. "That our friendship never existed."
"I'm sorry Ben. You really don't deserve that."
"Yeah I bet you are," Ben started to get dozy and was suddenly unaware of his surroundings.
"What's wrong Ben?" Nicki seemed concerned, even though she was the cause of Ben's sudden ailment.
"I…need…to…find…Jenna," Ben slurred, getting drowsier by the second.
"Come on," Nicki motioned. "She's upstairs. I'll take you to her."
Nicki essentially carries Ben into Jenna's parents' bedroom and begins to kiss him, as the screen fades to black.
