A Leaf in the Fall

by Riana Rivers

I watch the leaves fall so cruelly to the ground,

mercilessly trampled by a million feet.

The rain shatters on them endlessly, quickly

turning into sleet.

Pleated and trampled into mush, I wonder

if some of the puddle they sit in is their

tears that haven't even the privilege of falling

on a bedsheet.

I feel for them, I know the helplessness of

their unavoidable fate of pain, the darkness

that consumes your heart, that makes you wonder

if you even Can feel. How everythings seems to

simply bleed out of you...

Then again, what does it matter? We're nothing

more than leaves
