A Current Affair

by Beverly Adsen

I squatted down next to my good friend Justine, watching the boys' soccer team practise. Among us were a couple of girls sitting in a long line watching their boyfriends. Justine was also watching her boyfriend Tony practise, I was only there not because of any guy but to get some fresh air and what better way to get fresh air than at the park.

A couple of guys in my class were there too, including Todd, Scott and Charles.

"Hey!" Tony swooped down to Justine, his face red, "where d'you wanna go after this?" He asked Justine.

"Um. Maybe shopping", said Justine.

"Okay! Just a little longer babe", Tony said and spanked a big wet kiss on her cheek, then ran back to the field.

"You wanna come with us?" Asked Justine.

"Ah, no", I said hurriedly. "I'd better get home, probly Mathew's broke his glasses again, I'll see you Monday, 'bye."

I jumped up and rushed away quickly. Tagging along on their date was like being invisible, and anyway, Tony never liked me, and I knew it, except Justine.

I slowed down a quarter of the way across the park and watched the game. Scott was hogging the ball as usual and Tony was trying to get the ball from him. I sighed and turned away. Justine liked me, why doesn't he like me?

"Ow", I gasped suddenly and clutched my head. I turned to look at the ball, scowling.

"Sorry!" yelled someone from the field. I turned and scowled at Todd.

"Sorry", repeated Todd, coming closer.

"Yeah", I said sarcastically and walked past him but I turned around to watch the game again and saw Todd getting the ball a few metres from me. It was funny. Todd was extremely cute. How come I've never noticed him before? I thought, as I walked home.

Saturday came and went and Sunday was a blur, I couldn't remember a thing on Sunday. Maybe it was because of that dream I had last night that said I was better off with Todd than Tony. Maybe. Dumb! Impossible! But I kept thinking about it as I walked into school on Monday morning.

Monday was an unforgettable day as I suddenly noticed someone I've never noticed before. Todd was in my roll call and he sat on the table across from mine. First period was English and he sat at the back while I sat on the side, the next double period was geography and he was also in it. Fourth period was History and he sat next to the most BRAINIEST and CUTEST Tony. Fifth period was maths and he sat right behind me. The sixth and seventh we had P.E. and he was also in it. He had the same classes as me all through Monday! And I never knew!

I'M IN LOVE! Sighing, I sat up on my bed and started doing my homework.

The next morning was a Tuesday, so it was a sports day, so I wore my grade sports uniform and shorts. The periods flew by slowly without Todd being in any of my classes except for commerce in period one and two. Finally the afternoon came. My softball team was playing at home. I liked softball but we always lose.

"Bet we lose again", said Justine quietly as we walked to the field.

"Yeah", I replied.

We were right. We did lose. Those Miller girls we played against were huge. Well, not exactly huge like gigantic size, but they were big. They towered over us like we were primary kids and they were the real High School kids, and they swung the ball way out the field. I was not surprised we lost but disappointment still flowed. "It happens to optimistic people", my mum always says.

We sat down to watch the boys' soccer game while the other school's softball girls went to the front of the school. Todd was in it.

"God! He's so up himself". Justine said, disgusted.

"Todd? Yeah, I know", I said.

"He's just walking around yelling for the ball. Doing tricks for nothing. What a loser". Justine said.

I sighed, wonder why I didn't notice him or care about it before.

Wellllllll...Back to Tony.
