Eyelash

by William Schroeder

As the panther sunk it's hungry teeth

Into the deer's fleshy belly, spilling pink.

An eyelash falls from it's thickening crud

And drops onto a smattering of blood.

Sliding down a jagged blade of grass,

Blood pools around the floating eyelash

Gathering the dust and loosened earth

Till it hardens like a ruby in the dirt.

It goes unseen until a tiny ant arrives.

Antennae explains the what, the how,and why.

It takes the message back to the waiting colony

Tells the others, "If you want to see how natures cries, come follow me."
