Biography
Garry Thomas Caleb Tizzard
I was born on March 16th, 1950 in La Scie, Newfoundland. I am the second oldest of five children (four boys and a girl). My father, Rev. Aubrey Malcolm Tizzard, was a United Church minister and had moved to La Scie, from Englee, in 1949.
My father was originally from Hillgrade, N. B. Bay, and my mother, Rowena Tizzard (nee Watkins), from nearby Indian Cove.
We moved from La Scie to Pilley's Island in 1950; from Pilley's Island to Campbelton in 1952; and from Campbelton, in 1954, when Father left for Mount Allison University. The rest of our family stayed in Hillgrade and Indian Cove. Father came home the following summer, 1955, and we moved to Ingonish Beach, Cape Breton, for the months of July and August; from Ingonish Beach we moved to Amherst Head, Nova Scotia; from Amherst Head to Centre Burlington, Nova Scotia in 1956; from Centre Burlington to Carmanville, Newfoundland in 1958; from Carmanville to Salmon Cove, C. Bay, Newfoundland in 1961; from Salmon Cove to
Donkin, Cape Breton in 1963; from Donkin to Oxford, Nova Scotia in 1968.
I was married in 1972, while living in Oxford, and have been with my wife, Janet, ever since. We have three children, Tom (30 yrs), Julia (27) and Jason (19). No grandchildren yet.
Janet and I moved to Fredericton, New Brunswick, in 1973 where I attended the Maritime Forest Ranger School and graduated from there in December of that year.
We moved to Grand Falls/ Windsor in 1974 where I worked with the Newfoundland Forestry Service for one year. I had applied for a job with the Dept. of Lands and Forests in Oxford, after graduating from Ranger School, so when that job opening came up in late 1974, plus the house we had wanted to buy in Collingwood, Janet's home community, came up for sale at the same time, we decided to move back to Nova Scotia.
As a result of being on the move so much, I have acquired a fairly eminent understanding of the various lifestyles, customs, etc. in the Atlantic provinces. I try to get home to Newfoundland at least five or six times a year and while there, gather information from old friends for the books I am writing, about living in Newfoundland in the 50's and 60's.
My father wrote two books about his life in the ministry in Newfoundland "On Sloping Ground" and "Down On The French Shore". He was working on a third, a sequel to "On Sloping Ground", but passed away in 1984 before finishing it. I took over from his writings and completed it a couple of years ago. It should be on the market by late fall of 2005.
I am now working on a sequel (still untitled) to "From Sloping Ground" and have it nearly completed.
"From Sloping Ground" ends in 1953, and the sequel to this era will end in 1963, when we, as a complete family, left Newfoundland for the last time.
